What is laser?
Lasers have been used for many years for cosmetic procedures including leg and facial veins and age spots. Now a hair removal laser has been developed.
The long pulse high energy Alexandrite laser emits a beam of light that passes through the skin to be absorbed by the hair follicle. The laser energy is transformed into heat which disables the follicle without damaging the surrounding tissue.
The long pulse Alexandrite laser safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin.
The best results have been achieved on darker hair. The Alexandrite wavelength in particular achieves the desired result without damaging the epidermal tissue and is especially gentle with darker skin types which contain more melanin.
Is the laser treatment painful?
The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. The sensation has been likened to an elastic band being flicked against the skin.
How long will the treatment take?
The procedure can take as little as five minutes or up to an hour, depending on the area treated. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in under ten minutes, legs and larger areas can take longer.
The Alexandrite laser offers the convenience of having legs or the back treated in a quick visit - during lunch, for example, with a quick return to your daily routine. Convenient hours including evenings and Saturdays are also available.
What precautions should be taken before and after treatment?
Avoid sun exposure to the treated area for four-six weeks before and after treatment. Avoid bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for six weeks prior to treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
You may require from three to six depending on the area and the hair type. During the initial visit, the Alexandrite laser removes visible hair and disables those follicles in the anagen (active) phase of the hair cycle.
The follicles in the telogen (dormant) phase are not affected by the laser energy. Eventually these dormant hairs will become active and begin to grow, and at this point can be effectively treated.
This is why any kind of laser or light based hair removal requires more than one session, over a period of time, which will vary depending upon the body site. Laser can also be combined with electrolysis as a fast-track to permanent hair removal.
Is the treatment permanent?
Results can be more accurately described as permanent hair reduction.
Are there any side effects?
The treated area may become pink or red within thirty minutes of treatment, this may last from a few hours to several days. Minor itchiness to the treated area may also be experienced for a couple of days.
Increased or decreased pigmentation is a rare occurrence. Following pre and post treatment advice will lessen any potential risk of side effects.
Is everyone suitable for laser hair removal?
No. Whilst the results achieved to date have exceeded most people's expectations, laser hair removal is not suitable or cost-effective for everyone. Meticulous are specialists in hair removal.
